8:06 a.m., awake, streaming 97.5 Virgin radio on the laptop, Tucker and Sarah say "now's the cue to call, taking caller number 9". Me and the g.f. on each of our cell phones plus the land line, busy, redial, busy, redial........ this continues for the next 5 minutes. Caller 9, not us but answers the question wrong. Lines are open again, redial, busy continues. Caller 10, correct answer, free trip to Antigua and not us. BOO!!!!!
Anyways, I figured if I cant be there at least I can write about it some more. Some food in Antigua = expensive. During our last visit to Antigua we opted too go with the European meal plan and our accommodations had a kitchenette and a few communal BBQ's out side. First thought steak on the barbie. Hit up the supermarket and find this.

The South American steaks were not too crazy but that $105 chunk was a bit much for 2 to eat and the single steak next to it was the only one. Chuck steak = chop up for stewing beef and top shelf NY strips were averaging $29 a steak. Plus a bag a charcoal and bottle of started fluid = go to Miracle's for lobster. So dinner in looks more like this.
Spaghetti and canned sauce for dinner one night, heat and serve Jamaican patties another and some chicken stir fry with rice and cold Carib lager. Needless to say when you're in Antigua you don't really want to spend your vacation in the kitchen cooking and doing dishes when you could be at the beach. Total grocery bill minus beer was around $70 which also got us toast, bacon and eggs for 5 out of the 7 days and some imported Doritos.
As for a few more spots one might want to dine out at when out and about in Antigua I have a few more recommendations. If you're in the capital St. John's Roti King is a must. Fast, friendly, cheap and hands down the best roti i have ever eaten. Don't believe Jay Eatz, Google it. Rated #1 out of 68 restaurants in St. John's and #5 out of all 163 restaurants in Antigua.

I went with the pork roti, the miss's went with the chicken and yes there was Carib lager.
Another good eat and drink option in St. John's is the Big Banana. We went once for breakfast cocktails and once for lunch. After trekking from the bus depot to Heritage Quay one builds up a thirst regardless of the fact that it's first call at the bar.
As for lunch, burgers and fries at $21 EC each or about 8 bucks Canadian. Solid burger at a solid price. I have included a link to the Big Banana's web site and the menu can be found under the "pizzas in paradise" section.

If you find yourself back at Jolly Harbour and are hungry for a quick and tasty lunch I recommend the Coconut Grill Restaurant at Jolly Beach Resort and Spa. They have some of the best jerk chicken I have had on holiday. For 5 bucks Canadian you can't go wrong with a meal that is served in minutes and gives you the fuel for another dip in the sea.

Finally if you find yourself lost walking back from a self-guided tour of Saint John's Cathedral attempting to reach the bus depot by taking a short cut through the suburbs of St. Johns and your feeling adventurous, I recommend a stop at Vivica's Bar. No idea what street it is on but it's in St. Johns, no web site, no mention anywhere on TripAdvisor or any forums but it's there I swear. Very local, very friendly owner and patrons and very helpful with directions when you are lost. Great beer and if you know how to play domino's you are more than likely get in on a game (or spectate like us) there and most of all it's a part of Antigua that is not on any tours. There are still 4 more trips up for grabs on the radio, wish me luck and if I win, save me a stool at Vivica's.
